6 September 2024
On Thursday 5 and Friday 6 September, Queen Mary University of London proudly hosted BioMedEng24, the 16th annual conference bringing together experts from across the Biomedical Engineering industry in the UK and internationally.
This year, more than 430 delegates attended and the programme featured over 30 sessions and more than 240 poster presentations were displayed. 56% of keynote speakers at this year's conference were women and 40% of all speakers were women.
Conference highlights included Plenary Speaker Professor Dame Molly Stevens from the University of Oxford and Imperial College London. The John Black Professor of Bionanoscience talked about her work balancing the investigation of fundamental science with the development of technology to address some of the major healthcare challenges, and her portfolio of designer biomaterials for applications in disease diagnostics and regenerative medicine.
Plenary speaker Professor Dame Molly Stevens told us "This conference seems to be really vibrant, it's great to see so many people coming from across the UK and different universities. A really good mix of early career researchers and more established professors - there's a really good vibe. I love looking round at the posters and seeing what all the younger people are up to."
"I've really loved the variety of the conferenceā¦ I've enjoyed the huge diversity of what I've seen here. I've learnt about modelling of blood flow, the impact resistance of Sikh turbans, and it's been great seeing the diversity of work going on in our community." Said Professor Sophie Williams from the University of Leeds.
The Plenary Debate was a lively, fun event which asked the attendees to vote on the most convincing argument. The academics argued for their discipline in 'Transforming Technology for Future Medicine'.
